Cengage Learning Sr. Brand and Marketing Communications Designer, National Geographic in Boston, Massachusetts


National Geographic Learning’s brand promise is to bring the world to the classroom, and the classroom to life. As a member of the National Geographic Learning Global English teaching Language (ELT) Marketing Team, the Brand and Marketing Communication Designer translates our brand promise into a visual brand identity in all aspects of our marketing, both print and digital, to support our marketing communications activities worldwide.

This position reports to the Director, Global Marketing, and works closely with senior management, product and marketing managers, other marketing design teams, and regional marketing colleagues.


  1. Concept and prototype
  • Translates our brand promise into designs and materials which strengthen our brand identity in all areas of marketing communications. These include print collateral, digital marketing, presentations, event marketing, customer partnerships, and brand guidelines.

  • Creates templates and guidelines for our brand identity in all the areas listed above, to ensure they are consistently implemented.

  • Integrates feedback from relevant stakeholders, including customers, into all aspects of marketing communications.

  1. Planning and management
  • Provides accurate schedules and information in status reports to key staff.

  • Manages a budget, and balance budget and quality.

3.Market implementation

  • Supports regional marketing counterparts with training and guidance on implementing our brand identity in their sales and marketing activities.

  • Works with stakeholders in different teams and regions to guide and support their marketing activities. On occasion, this includes working with customers directly.

4.Collaborative development

  • Works closely with senior management, product and marketing managers, other marketing design teams, and regional marketing colleagues to execute successful marketing and brand communications.

  • Creates a system to adjust and refine our brand identity, brand guidelines and templates to incorporate feedback from key stakeholders, including customers.

  • Coordinates with the Operations team to identify photographic resources for use in marketing.

  1. Performs other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design, media design, and/or related field or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in graphic design and art direction, preferably in a marketing communications role or environment with a major brand

  • Working knowledge of HTML5 and CSS

  • Portfolio of work that demonstrates clear and creative presentation of concepts and messages, for print and digital design, and mastery of graphic design and typography

  • Excellent knowledge of layout, graphic design, composition, pre-press, art, illustration, photography, printing production techniques and standards

  • Macintosh OS, with high proficiency in Adobe CC suite of applications; proficiency with Microsoft Office

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate and present design concepts to non-design stakeholders, individually and in group settings

  • Ability to work effectively with others, often remotely, to create powerful, clear, and easily implemented design materials

  • Ability to create training materials, and deliver training, often remotely, to key stakeholders


  • Experience in educational publishing, especially in English Language Teaching, or a marketing communication or marketing role

  • Experience with tablet and mobile design
