Cengage Learning ELT- Development Editor in Boston, Massachusetts


The Development Editor is a member of the National Geographic Team and manages in-house and out-of-house development of both print and digital ESL (English as a Second Language) content and materials. The position involves analyzing, preparing, reviewing, and writing content; collaborating with in-house editors; managing authors, writers, and other outside resources; project scheduling and tracking; budget tracking; content quality assurance, and creating/executing product enhancement strategies


  1. Works under the supervision of the publisher, executive editor, managing editor, and/or development director

  2. Assists in managing the development of materials for print and electronic delivery—including student books, ancillaries, and tech products—at all stages of the development process

  3. Analyzes content and write editorial development guidelines

  4. Under supervision, provide direction to writers in terms of content suitability, accuracy, style, format, and structure

  5. Reviews and fact check content

  6. Rewrites content when necessary

  7. Attends audio recordings and review audio

  8. Creates and maintain editorial schedules

  9. Tracks budgets

  10. Problem-solves daily process issues

  11. Prepares project documentation such as design memos, art logs, audio scripts, audio error reports, bookmaps

  12. Brings projects to completion within specified deadlines and budgets

  13. Helps generate product surveys

  14. Helps gather and analyze customer input

  15. Assists in entering, updating, and managing product information on internal systems (e.g. IPS)

  16. Helps organize and maintain project materials in repositories

  17. Helps coordinate and efficiently monitor the transmittal of materials between in-house staff and outside project members (freelancers, authors, etc.)

  18. Performs other duties as assigned



  • S. or B.A. degree or equivalent

  • Minimum 2 years of ESL publishing and/or ESL teaching experience

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to established deadlines

  • Must be innovative, highly motivated, and team-oriented
