Cengage Learning Associate Development Editor in Boston, Massachusetts

Overview:

The Associate Development Editor manages the development of programs for print and electronic delivery—including student books, all ancillaries, and tech products. This role provides direction to authors on writing and structure of content, may re-write content, prepares necessary designs and scripts, and ensures completion of projects within deadlines and budgets.

Responsibilities:

  • Work under the supervision of the publisher, executive editor, managing editor, and/or development director

  • Assist in managing the development of materials for print and electronic delivery—including student books, ancillaries, and tech products—at all stages of the development process

  • Analyze content and write editorial development guidelines

  • Under supervision, provide direction to writers in terms of content suitability, accuracy, style, format, and structure

  • Review and fact check content

  • Rewrite content when necessary

  • Attend audio recordings and review audio

  • Create and maintain editorial schedules

  • Track budgets

  • Problem-solve daily process issues

  • Prepare project documentation such as design memos, art logs, audio scripts, audio error reports, bookmaps

  • Bring projects to completion within specified deadlines and budgets

  • Help generate product surveys

  • Help gather and analyze customer input

  • Assist in entering, updating, and managing product information on internal systems (e.g. IPS)

  • Help organize and maintain project materials in repositories

  • Help coordinate and efficiently monitor the transmittal of materials between in-house staff and outside project members (freelancers, authors, etc.)

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A. degree or equivalent

  • Minimum 2 years of publishing and/or teaching experience

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to established deadlines

  • Must be innovative, highly motivated, and team-oriented
